Thursday in Zhengzhou

Today was a bit of an adventure of the boys. It started around 4:30 a.m. as usual. Derek got Matthew out of the crib and put him in Derek's bed. Matthew snuggled into Derek's chest and neck while Derek and I talked over WeChat.

Then, Matthew ended up curling up to Andrew and falling asleep again.

After they were awake again, and I was talking with Andrew and Matthew, Derek went to get Andrew's steroid and nebulizer ready to help with his asthma.

Matthew ended up falling off the bed head-first around this time. For the next hour, Derek had a hard time keeping Matthew awake. No goose-egg formed. Derek tried his hardest to wake Matthew up but was unsuccessful. He prayed over Matthew, put him in the stroller, and rolled him downstairs to the cafeteria.

With the bright lights in his eyes and lots of noise, Derek was able to get him to wake up and drink some yogurt. Matthew kept trying to fall asleep while drinking.

Knowing Matthew needed to stay awake, Derek took Andrew and Matthew to the aquarium for a distraction. Matthew bounced out of the head injury and began to be himself again.

Matthew began some eye medication, since he has an infection in his eyes. Derek is experiencing what being a "mean mommy" feels like 😉. Matthew does not appreciate drops being put in his eyes, nor does he like his teeth brushed. At all! As in, Derek said, blood drips from his mouth when his teeth are brushed.

Samuel and Matthew are my only two from the same orphanage, and they both have the same non-brushing habits (which results in infected gums and a power struggle over putting a toothbrush into their mouths).

People in China keep asking about Matthew's age. Derek says he is wearing size 2T (because that is what I packed), but the clothing is too big. He should be wearing size 18-month clothing. Therefore, he is extremely small for being 3½-years-old. However, if you talk with him (in Mandarin), you'll notice he is indeed a lot older than he appears.

Matthew's joking side is beginning to emerge. Derek said he kept joking with him today. Yay!

Derek also said he eats very slowly--as in, it can take him 3 hours to eat one cracker. When the guide talked with him about it, he simply said that his "belly is happy". Precious!

Derek is doing his very best, and the adoption group is being so supportive of them. He says (continually) that everyone is are very helpful with the boys, bags, or anything that needs to be done.

God bless the sweet boys and their daddy as they sleep. Nighty night.
